Ballena Jorobada Tours — Uvita Whales

About us

One boat. One family. A shared love for the sea.

Our beginnings

Our adventure began humbly, with a single boat operating in a remote area—no office, no formal structure—just passion and love for the sea. Founded by William Chavarría and Karina Abarca, we initially focused solely on whale watching and fishing tours, creating unforgettable experiences for every visitor.

As demand grew, we opened our first office and obtained our tourism certification, and Lorenzo Chavarría joined our team, allowing us to expand our services and serve our clients with greater professionalism.

Today, our expertise lies in organizing activities in some of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural areas, including Marino Ballena National Park, Corcovado National Park, Isla del Caño Biological Reserve and the Térraba-Sierpe wetlands. Offering kayaking, rappelling and fishing tours, as well as wildlife tours, we design experiences that connect you with nature.

Our team is comprised of expert guides with in-depth knowledge of the local flora and fauna. We are passionate about sharing Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity in a fun, educational and respectful way. Sustainability and safety are at the heart of everything we do—we prioritize responsible tourism practices and ensure that every adventure is conducted with both your well-being and the environment in mind.

Our boats

Our journey on the water began in July 2019 with the launch of our first vessel, Ballena Jorobada Tours I (registration PQ9521). This boat marked the beginning of our family project, dedicated exclusively to whale watching and sport fishing tours. It was on this vessel that we first shared the magic of Costa Rica’s marine life with our guests, creating unforgettable experiences and laying the foundation for our company’s passion and expertise.

As our family business grew, so did our ambitions. In 2022, we expanded our fleet with a second boat, Ballena Jorobada Tours II (registration PQ9382). With this new vessel, we continued to offer whale watching and sport fishing tours—and opened up exciting new destinations, including Isla del Caño Biological Reserve and Corcovado National Park.

More than just boats, each vessel represents our commitment to sustainable tourism, safety and high-quality maritime experiences. Carefully maintained and operated by our expert captains and crew, every voyage is focused on safety and unforgettable moments.
